Lost was the first still life I made. I had photographed a lot of people at that time and all those self-images drove me crazy. I remember building this still life and thinking how wonderful the objects don't talk back! This gave me such freedom to create. I put the light on my setup and I thought wow this is 17th century light, it felt like a present! After that I started to delve into the 17th century still lifes and I started playing with ingredients. But if you look closely you see clear references to our time, they are actually a kind of inter-historical works, the past and present time come together.
Lost is part of the exhibition 'oysters and lemons' in the Muiderslot, which can be seen from 2 September to mid-November 2022.
